Couch grass is a warm season grass that is native to most areas of the eastern hemisphere. These grasses are commonly known to be highly drought and wear tolerant. A manicured couch lawn can look great in front of your home. However, a bit more time and effort is required due its fast growth rate.
Why Choose Couch Turf?
Couch grass thrives in full sun areas and has very strong horizontal growth. This allows it to tolerate very low mowing heights. These strong growth habits also add to its ability to handle high amounts of traffic, whilst enable it to recover quicker if affected by wear and stress. This makes couch turf suitable for large areas such as sports fields, golf courses, as well as parks and recreational areas. These grasses can grow in a range of soil types, from sandy soils to light clays.
Couches are not one of the most shade tolerant turf types, needing in most cases a bare minimum of five to six hours of direct sunlight a day.
Couch grasses have a great ability to recover from wear. Their underground stems called rhizomes support repairs, as do aboveground stems called stolons.
Kikuyu has been popular as a lawn grass in Australia since time immemorial. This native grass from Uganda was first introduced in NSW in 1919. Popular for being an erosion control grass, Kikuyu grows well in areas with full sun exposure, a cool climate, and high rainfall regions.
Kikuyu needs a lot of water during summer so it will stay green. Regular fertilising is also required to maintain its colour and health. Mowing once a week is also needed if the grass is thriving.
Why Choose Kikuyu Turf?
Kikuyu is most suitable for areas with high traffic and full sun exposure. This type of grass doesn’t need high upkeep but needs lots of water to stay vibrant. If not watered properly, Kikuyu will become brown. However, even if it lies dormant, a little rain is all it takes to revive Kikuyu. Its quick repair capabilities are the main standout feature of this grass.
Kikuyu is mostly used for school grounds, public parks and camping areas. This is because it can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Even if stomped on excessively, it will recover well if it is showered with water. Kikuyu is also great for animal farms as pasture grass. However, since it is an invasive grass, it shouldn’t be put in watercourses.
Other people also like using Kikuyu because of its soft leaf, which can create a soft lawn for everyone to enjoy, especially when the weather is nice outdoors.
Sapphire is a variety of Buffalo grass with fine texture. It is regarded as Buffalo grass lawn with genuine soft leaf. When fully grown, its leaves fold back, giving it a better look. Since it has a deep root system, Sapphire can look great even with less watering frequency.
In areas with normal soil where Sapphire turf grows, watering is required only during warmer months and at times of extreme heat. Watering them once every few weeks is enough for Sapphire to survive.
Why Choose Sapphire?
Sapphire has a tight mat which leaves little room for growing weeds. This type of grass also grows fast across the ground and copes well in areas with high traffic. If you are going to use Sapphire in high-traffic areas, you should water and fertilise them frequently.
Regular mowing is likewise recommended for this type of grass to about a height of 35-60mm for best results. Mowing regularly will limit thatch build up and will reduce runners. This will ensure that your Sapphire lawn will stay healthy and greener.
The deep root system this type of turf grass has works best in withstanding drought. Its low thatch levels can make it slower to recover from wear and tear during the first two years. After that, however, low thatch lawns will prove to have more long-term advantages.
We have mentioned how great Sapphire looks in any lawn. This is due to its fine texture with a slight hue of blue colour to its leaf. Apart from that, Sapphire also has a fine leaf blade unlike any other variety of Buffalo. It also stands out from the rest, thanks to its low thatch levels and excellent sun tolerance.
This tough but soft leaf type of grass is a variety of Buffalo. It has a similar broad leaf that compares to other Buffalo types like Old Sydney and Sir Walter. Basically, if you are looking for a soft leaf grass for your home lawn, you should consider getting the Palmetto.
Why Choose Palmetto?
Palmetto is the top selling brand of Buffalo grass in the world. It has proven to be one of the better-quality Buffalo grasses because it has really low thatch levels, superb drought recovery, excellent sun tolerance and a beautiful winter colour.
This type of grass grows at a fast rate, but its upward leaf growth is not like other varieties of Buffalo. It is quite popular because it doesn’t require frequent mowing unlike other Buffalo varieties. Palmetto grows fast across the ground, but it grows slowly upwards, which makes it easier to maintain. It does not require a lot of watering.
Another remarkable thing about Palmetto is it highly weed resistant. Once the Palmetto has passed the establishing phase, its dense growth out-competes weeds. As it actively grows, it doesn’t allow weeds to invade its ground. This doesn’t mean that weeds will not grow; but using Palmetto as your turf grass will minimise the growth of weeds on your lawn.
Palmetto grows well in areas with full sun exposure, but it also thrives in shaded areas. You will not get this feature from other types of grass. This is especially true during the winter season. When other types of grass fail, Palmetto still survives with a beautiful winter colour.
In the 1990s, Shademaster was among the first soft Buffalo grasses in the Australian market. First developed in a NSW turf farm, this type of Buffalo grass goes into the generic budget category. It quickly picked a clientele during the time when Buffalo was not popular as a home lawn option.
Why Choose Shademaster?
As its name suggests, if you are growing your lawn but it is located in a shaded area, Shademaster is the type of grass you are looking for. One of the best traits of Shademaster is that it is a slow-growing type of buffalo grass. As such, it doesn’t require frequent mowing. Its wide leaf and growth habit makes it thrive in difficult growing conditions. All of these reasons make Shademaster easier to maintain compared to other Buffalo varieties. Cold weather makes the Shademaster’s leaf tips turn purple, which can enhance the aesthetics of your garden.
This type of Buffalo grass is ideal for high traffic areas and the answer for people trying to grow their lawn in shaded areas. Shademaster Buffalo Grass can withstand wear and tear. Even if it is popular for shaded lawns, it also performs well in areas with full sun exposure.
Shademaster has a soft broad leaf that is 85% shade tolerant but also thrives in full sun. Its colour is a nice bottle green shade. This type provides a thick green carpet cover that discourage the growth and invasion of weeds.
Please note: If you put Shademaster near gardens, it tends to compete with surrounding vegetation.
